KUCHING: The smoking ban at eateries continues to be enforced in areas under Kuching South City Council (MBKS) jurisdiction.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said while the MBKS enforcement team was busy tackling the issue of compliance with standard operating procedure (SOP) among various businesses, they did not forget to remind the public to stay healthy and to protect the environment by reducing public smoking.

“Yes, people tend to forget about the ban. Our enforcement team was back to warning the public beginning last weekend and I have also reminded the public through my Facebook posts,” he said when asked to comment on whether the people have started smoking at eateries in MBKS areas.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali on Saturday said the Ministry of Health (MOH) had not stopped enforcing the smoking ban at eateries when alluding to complaints about people smoking at eateries after their reopening.

Wee added that he was also glad that most shopping malls had prepared their own smoking zones.

“As for eateries and markets operating in areas under MBKS jurisdiction, we will identify places to create smoking zones soon,” he said.

He also reminded the public that the council would continue to issue compound fines commensurate with the offences.

“The first offence is RM150, the second is RM250, and the third is RM350,” he said.
