Smuggled fags worth RM1.9 mln seized

SERIAN: The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) seized 11,680 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth RM1.96 million from a premises in Bukar Sadong Land District on Sunday (June 7).

Following a public tip-off, a 13-member squad from the 11th Battalion raided the premises around 9.30am during an operation codenamed Op Libas.

Commanding officer Supt Rosdi Inai said 11,680 cigarette cartons of various brands, believed to be smuggled, were stored in the premises.

“A teenager who admitted to be the keeper of the premises was arrested,” he said in a statement.

The cigarettes were believed to have been smuggled in from a neighbouring country.

Rosdi said the case was handed over to the Serian District police headquarters (IPD) for investigation under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.

He appealed to the public to continue providing information to the authorities to control smuggling and other criminal activities.
