SIBU: The traffic committee here has come out with a pilot project involving three schools to curb traffic congestion.

The schools are SMK Sacred Heart, SK Sacred Heart English and Catholic High School.

This was revealed by Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek during an inspection on Monday (June 13).

“I received a lot of complaints that sometimes they (road users) had to spend more than 45 minutes just to get through this road, and this is unacceptable,” he said.

Chieng shared that they would ensure two out of the five lanes in front of SMK Sacred Heart would be free to be used by the public passing through the area while another three for parents to pick up their children.

“We are testing this method with the help of the traffic police, Rela (People’s Volunteer Corps), Sibu Municipal Council and the school.
“We hope that we will be able to free two lanes in front of these schools for more traffic to pass through rather than it stalling all the time after school.”

He pointed out that the pilot project was welcomed by the public, especially parents, as it seemed to be able to help with the problem.

“The parents…they are also very happy because it won’t be jammed after they pick up their children. They are able to leave straight away without waiting. So, so far so good.”

However, Chieng also shared that a small number of parents were still very stubborn and insisted on parking within the two lanes.

“It is unacceptable as this leaves only one lane for traffic to pass through. So that is why we decided to free two lanes.

“I hope that all parties—the council, traffic police, Rela, the school, and particularly the parents—will cooperate.”

He suggested that parents pick up their children at the commercial centre across the road so that the situation would be less congested.

“Rela personnel will make sure that the students cross the road safely. So, so far so good for this school. I am very happy with the cooperation and teamwork of our Sibu traffic committee.”

The pilot project will be tested until September and then the committee will discuss and come out with a long-term solution.
