KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak matriculation students in West Malaysia and Labuan were touched and thankful to the Sarawak government for arranging their return journeys to the state between Tuesday (May 11) and Friday (May 14).

Rumah Sarawak in Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak Volunteers helped the government to manage and facilitate their students’ journeys.

On the morning of Syawal 1 today (May 13), 35 more Sarawak matriculation students in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor returned to Sarawak.

All these student boarded flight MH2574 from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Miri.

They comprised 10 students from Selangor Matriculation College, Johor Engineering Matriculation College (8), Negeri Sembilan Matriculation College (8), Melaka Matriculation College (6), and Johor Matriculation College (3).

With the movement control order (MCO) re-implemented in the country due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is indeed not easy to return to one’s hometown, especially if this involves travelling inter-state.

Farah

One of the matriculation students from Johor, 19-year-old Farah Nur Ayuni Fadzil from Kampung Permy Jaya in Miri, said even though they needed to undergo compulsory quarantine upon arrival in Miri, at least they still had the opportunity to return to their villages in the month of Syawal and celebrate with their families at home once they had completed their quarantine period.

The Science student, who is the second child of three siblings, thanked the Sarawak government, Education Ministry (MOE), and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) for permitting them to return home to be with their families.

Aqilah

As for Aqilah Husna Abdul Aziz, 19 from Taman Sri Kubong, Limbang, her return on Syawal 1 was highly anticipated despite having to undergo quarantine upon arrival in Sarawak.

The third child of five siblings, who is also studying Science in Johor, could not wait to be reunited with her family members. She is the only one among her siblings who’s studying outside Sarawak.

Hwong

Although Hwong Jin Lok, 19 — the elder of two siblings – does not celebrate Aidilfitri, returning to Sarawak is a very meaningful gift for him.

The Science student in Johor was very grateful to the Sarawak government, especially Rumah Sarawak in Kuala Lumpur, which had greatly helped in facilitating their return.

“It is not easy to cross inter-state under current circumstances. However, Rumah Sarawak has helped a lot and facilitated our affairs.

“The travel process which is difficult to manage on our own has been simplified with the help of Rumah Sarawak. I am very grateful,” said Hwong, who hails from Taman Siang Siang in Miri.

Meanwhile, a team from Rumah Sarawak, led by its director Awang Supian Awang Daud, was present to send the students off this morning. The team members distributed food and beverages to the students before they boarded their flight from KLIA to Miri.

In total, 952 Sarawak matriculation students in West Malaysia and Labuan have been flown back to Sarawak between May 11 last year and May 14 this year.
