MUKAH:  The influence of social media is wide and far reaching and it has been found to be one of the reasons for divorce.

This was revealed by Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah when officiating at the closing of ‘Baitulmuslim: Islamic Smart Parenting Skills’ and ‘Till Jannah: Smart Marriage’ programmes at a hotel here on Thursday.

“While polygamy is among the reasons for divorce, surprisingly, the influence of social media also causes the spouses to break up,” she said.

Fatimah, who is also Dalat assemblywoman, added other factors leading to divorce were lack of understanding, family violence, financial problem, abandonment by a spouse, marriage not consented by parents and also inability to conceive.

She hoped that the programmes, organised by Women and Family Department Sarawak (JWKS), would help to reduce the rate of divorce in Sarawak.
