KUCHING: The Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) under the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) will be expanded to 18 informal sectors starting next year, benefiting 218,500 self-employed individuals in Sarawak.

“These sectors include small businesses, farmers, fishermen, and artists,” said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said that SKSPS contributions were currently mandatory for taxi, rental car, e-hailing and bus drivers based on the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017.

His text of speech was presented by Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali during the Sarawak EIS Perkeso Career Carnival 2019 at Mydin Hypermart, Petra Jaya, yesterday.

“Those who employ foreigners have to contribute to the Employment Injury Scheme for Foreign Workers.

“Starting January 2020, all employers have to register with Perkeso even though foreign workers are covered under the Foreign Workers Compensation Scheme (FWCS),” Abang Johari said.

He commended Perkeso, saying that the services provided were on par with employment services in advanced countries and not solely relying on employment portals.

“The face-to-face service approach is a step towards transforming quality service especially to rural youths who do not have the experience and work skills,” he said.
