KUCHING: The Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) marked World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) today (July14) to celebrate and appreciate blood donors who have contributed to support kids battling cancer as well as others in need of transfusions.

(WBDD) is celebrated annually on June 14 to raise awareness of the need of safe blood and blood products to save lives. The day is also celebrated to encourage more voluntary blood donation.

“Childhood cancer patients may need blood products on a regular basis to enable them to undergo chemotherapy or receive critical treatments needed to fight and survive cancer.

“On average every month, seven to 12 pints of blood are needed for red blood cells transfusion in addition to 12 to 15 packs of platelets at Sarawak General Hospital’s Ward 2A,” SCCS said in a social media.

This year’s slogan for WBDD is ‘Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the efforts and save lives.’

The society said the slogan highlighted the importance of blood donation and bringing the community together to save lives.

“Spread the word and donate because a single drop can make a huge different,” SCCS said.
