Society to focus on conservation of state’s orchids

KUCHING: The Sarawak Orchid Society (Sarorso) recently paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang at the Chief Minister’s official residence at No 30, Sri Minangkabau II, Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yaakub, here. 

Juma’ani has been appointed as Sarorso’s first patron and conferred the title “Ibu Konservasi Orkid Negeri – IKON 1”.

Sarorso president Zurenawatte Zaidil highlighted the society’s focus on the conservation of Sarawak’s indigenous species of orchids and efforts to create public awareness of their existence and importance to Sarawak’s floral heritage. 

During the visit, they also exchanged views on various issues related to the various species of orchids in Sarawak including ways to further strengthen skills and knowledge on the conservation, preservation and propagation of the flowers. 

Sarorso also highlighted its effort in looking for new habitats for rescued orchids and fostering the interest of youths in local indigenous orchids, with the aim of initiating and supporting the development of sustainable community enterprise, conservation and education.
