KUCHING: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) will open counters for its Self-Employment Social Security Scheme at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) building lobby.

The counters will be available on Oct 20 and 27, from 9am to 12pm.

In a statement, MBKS urged hawkers in the city to register for the scheme.

Those interested should bring along their hawker licence and a copy of their Identity Card (IC).

The Self-Employment Social Security Scheme is to provide protection for individuals who are self-employed under the provisions of the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017.

Initially, the scheme was made compulsory for the passenger transportation sector — taxis, e-hailing services, and bus drivers under the provisions of the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017, which took effect on June 1, 2017.

Starting January 1 this year, the scheme was extended to 19 other self-employment sectors, including agriculture, forestry, fisheries, food, construction, hawkers, online business, arts, among others.

To qualify for the scheme, applicants must be Malaysian or with permanent residency status, without age limit. They must also be self-employed to earn a living.

The required documents to apply are a copy of one’s IC as well as a copy of driving licence/e-hailing profile/permit/licence/certificate or letter of confirmation from the relevant association or agency subject to the type of sector.

Payment of contribution can be made on a yearly or monthly basis.

Cash payment can be made at all Perkeso offices while online payment can be done via https://matrix.perkeso.gov.my.

More details including the various benefits of the scheme can be found on Perkeso’s website at https://www.perkeso.gov.my/.
