KOTA SAMARAHAN: Soft skills are important, especially when it comes to everyday business in companies or organisations.

Malaysian American Electronics Industry (MAEI) chairman Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai said that the importance of soft skills cannot be understated.

“It is a key for communicating with another group, and as you see how leaders and chief executive officers’ (CEO) talk, you can see their communications skills.

“Sometimes we often wonder how to persuade others to get them to do something. It is through soft skills. If you can’t persuade people, then it means that your communication is not good enough,” he said.

He said this during the CEO@Faculty programme at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) campus here yesterday.

On the topic of communication, Wong said that English is still the best language to use as a medium if one wants to go global.

“You have no choice. If you want to go global, you must know English. We are communicating with clients every day, thus, we have to use the language.

“If your English is not good, then you must start learning,” he said.

Wong added that there are three dominant languages in the business world that one should master to succeed.

“However, you can also choose, it is either English, Chinese (Mandarin) or Spanish. With that, you can cover the whole world,” he said.
