KUCHING: The solar hybrid project for rural schools in Sarawak should continue, said Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“The original purpose of the project was to supply light and electricity to schools in the interior.

“It will not be good if the project which is meant to benefit and help the community, ends up uncompleted,” he told reporters after officiating at the Kuching Intercultural Mooncake Festival at Carpenter Street last night.

Abdul Karim, however, wasn’t sure if the project had been implemented but hoped the project would go on to help those living in the rural areas.

To a question on Datin Sri Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former prime minister Datuk Sri Najib Tun Razak, who was found guilty on three counts of corruption involving the RM1.25 billion solar hybrid energy project for rural schools in Sarawak, he said the court’s decision is proof that the rule of law is in practice in Malaysia regardless of a person’s status.

“No one is above the law, not even a prime minister, former prime minister or a person of status. If you are punished and the court’s decision is final, then it must be heeded,” he said.

He said it should serve as a lesson to all civil servants entrusted by the public to carry out their duties responsibly.

“You have to be careful”, he added.
