Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin (third let) is briefed on the Kampung Batu Satu Kuala Baram Erosion Control Project on Tuesday (June 14)

MIRI: Several modifications will be made to the Kampung Batu Satu Kuala Baram Erosion Control Project to overcome the stranding of driftwood debris on the beach.

“A team of experts and engineers have studied and suggested that the groynes (low wall or barrier) and existing concrete ramps need to be extended further to overcome the phenomenon of wood debris,” said Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin.

“The incidence of piles of wood fragments brought in by the tide is not a new thing and this makes it difficult for fishing boats,” he said after reviewing the latest developments of the project yesterday (June 14).

The Senadin assemblyman informed that the project is now 50.22 per cent complete and is expected to be fully completed in April 2023.

Lee said the project comes under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) with a total allocation of RM17,388,000.

“The cost of this project includes hydraulic modelling study, wave study, tread design and project supervision work.

“The scope of the project includes the construction of a 200-metre long breakwater off the coast, five groynes and a concrete ramp that can accommodate more than 100 boats to make it easier for fishermen to get in and out,” he said.

Also present during the visit was Miri Drainage and Irrigation Department Engineer Hiew Si Tien.
