KUCHING: Explanations and strict enforcement come hand in hand in handling the Covid-19 pandemic, said Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

“Our government has to take serious measures because after the announcement on the movement control order (MCO) was made, there are still people not heeding the order,” she said.

She said, meanwhile, some were listening and complying with the order.

“They understand how easily the virus can spread from one person to multiple persons through contact or when in a crowd.

“Some people do not comply. Some comply only when there is strict enforcement and with monetary penalties involved,” she pointed out.

Earlier, it was reported in various cities that there were still civilians not abiding by the MCO.

According to a federal government gazette dated March 18, individuals who breach the directives of the MCO could be fined not more than RM1,000 or jailed for not more than six months, or both.

The nationwide MCO was implemented from March 18 and will continue until March 31 in efforts to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.
