ASAJAYA: Harmonious melodies filled the air as Sarawak Orchestra Symphony (SONS) performed at the Asajaya Sports Complex last Saturday night (Sept 26).

The contemporary musical performance, which was a treat for local residents, also featured local singers namely, NurHijrah, Hafizah Superdi, Norman Ningkan, Max Kueh and Iwan Dasri.

The programme also featured a video montage of “Dolok Nonok, Asajaya Kinek Tok” which recalled the growth of Asajaya.

Other performances included local bands and a Gendang Nopeng performance.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah explained that SONS was a music ensemble established in 1988. It was mooted by current Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who was chief minister at that time.

“Tun Pehin Sri’s dream was for Sarawak to have an orchestra and choir group comprising talented local children from various races. His dream finally came true with the establishment of SONS which was launched on March 30,1989.

“Asajaya District is very lucky to be selected as the first location in the Samarahan Division for SONS to perform.

“In line with the rapid development taking place in the district, this programme will be a platform to strengthen ties between the people and the arts and cultural agencies,” he said.

Abdul Karim said this when officiating at the musical performance entitled “Asajayaku Sayang” on Saturday night (Sept 26).

Karim, who is also the Asajaya assemblyman, added that SONS was divided into three components, namely SONS Classic, Pop Jazz Orchestra and SONS Choir.

“Now we are also providing space for young talents to participate in SONS Junior which is the result of the Year-round Music Arts Guidance Course organised by the Sarawak Arts Council (SAC) over the past few years.

The two-night programme, which started on Friday (Sept 25), was organised by SAC under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak in collaboration with Kota Samarahan Resident Office and Asajaya Resident Office.
