South African paddler maintains top spot on second leg of international challenge

PEKAN: South African Dawid Mocke continued to dominate the second stage of the Pahang Ocean Paddle International Challenge (POPIC) 2022 at Pantai Lagenda, here today (Sept 7).

He finished the Open International Single Ocean Race category with a time of 1:13:39.87s, emerging first in the second leg of the five-day competition.

Mocke overcame two close competitions, namely Kent Jenkinson from New Zealand in second place (1:13:39.87s) and Mackenzie Hynard from Australia in third place (1:13:42.34s).

Meanwhile, the women’s category showed no change as the three top paddlers maintained their podium finishes.

New Zealand’s Danielle MacKenzie remained the leader two days in a row with a time of 1:59:27.32s.

Irin Neegree from Thailand finished in second place with a time of 2:19:30.54s.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Aimi Ayumi Azwan also maintained her third place spot with a time of 2:16:36.21.

POPIC 2022, the first of its kind to be held in Malaysia, is set to take place over the course of five days between Sept 7 to 11.

The third stage tomorrow (Sept 9) will take place at Pantai Balok, Kuantan while the final two stages will be held in Pantai Cherating and Pantai Teluk Cempedak.

A total of 39 paddlers participated in the men’s event and 11 competed in the women’s event for the main categories.
