KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is mulling the possibility of digitalising its underground utility cables and piping system.

Mayor Datuk James Chan said this would benefit future development works and ease expansion within Kuching city.
He added that the proposed project, along with the Smart Traffic Systems and iPeople app by MBKS, a digital mode of communication for the public to provide feedback to the council, were efforts in line with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision of digitalisation.

“We will look into enhancing our operating systems with innovative technological features such that applications for regular city council products become digitally available for people to access conveniently,” Chan said at the 31st Kuching City Commemoration Day celebration held at Majma’ Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Hall at Jalan P Ramlee here yesterday.

In supporting urban renewal by the state government, another study is also in progress on the KMC Flats including its surrounding landmarks towards providing potential options and recommendations for the redevelopment of the area.

The study will evaluate factors such as KMC Flats’ historical significance, social factors, traffic, retail, and recreational needs of the residents.

“Feedback was gathered from local residents through an open-day community engagement session,” Chan said, adding that the public response would be taken into consideration during the planning process.

“Ultimately, the revival of the Padungan precinct will be beneficial for everyone concerned,” he said.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated at yesterday’s event which was hosted by Kuching North City Hall (DBKU). Also present were Abang Johari’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, Assistant Ministers Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali and DBKU mayor Datuk Abdul Wahap Abang Julai.
