KUCHING: Appreciate the true value and privilege of being a Malaysian, says the secretary of Sarawak Patriots Association.

“Although this year will be the second year of the Covid-19 pandemic and there will be no large festivities, let us remember what our predecessors worked for to create the multiracial society we currently have,” said David Hii Chin Loung.

He stated that the rights and privileges of Sabah and Sarawak were eroded due to constitutional, political, social and religious developments.

“The spirit of 1963 as epitomised by our founding fathers and embodied in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 must be rekindled to recapture the spirit of accommodation, moderation, and compassion in our secular country.

“We urge the relevant authorities to re-dedicate themselves to the pacts and facts of the past and there is a dire need for greater constitutional literacy to appreciate the scheme of things in 1963.

“The time for reparation has come and much more must be done to undo the wrongs and injustices inflicted on Sabah and Sarawak to values in the Federation of Malaysia as embodied and epitomised by the illustrious leaders and founding fathers who signed the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).”

SPA committee member Edmund Lee said Malaysians needed to “put our head and hearts together to defuse the tensions and find just and lasting solutions”.

“The federal government cannot ignore but be concerned by a large reservoir of discontent in Sabah and Sarawak,” he added.
