KUALA LUMPUR: Special Branch director, Datuk Seri Mohamad Fuzi Harun is the new Inspector-General of Police.

Mohamad Fuzi, 58, took office yesterday to succeed Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar who went on mandatory retirement, also yesterday.

The handing over of duties for the top post in the Royal Malaysia Police took place yesterday at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here, witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Mohamad Fuzi joined the Royal Malaysia Police on Jan 8, 1984, as a cadet ASP (assistant superintendent of police) at Pulapol.

He served as the acting Deputy IGP for two months in 2014.

Mohamad Fuzi was appointed director of the Special Branch in July 2015.

He said he would focus on efforts to fight terrorism.

“I express my gratitude to the government, particularly the Deputy Prime Minister, for the appointment and also to Tan Sri Khalid who has provided much guidance in matters associated with police duties,” he said.

Asked about the threat of terrorism, Mohamad Fuzi said the issue would continue to be given attention and added that the government had approved 343 new appointments for the Counter Terrorism Division at Bukit Aman alone.

“These appointments will surely strengthen the capability of the division, and I believe the terrorism problem will be addressed, both at the domestic and international levels,” he said. – Bernama
