KUCHING: The Special Olympics (SO) Kuching team were selected for the first time to represent the country at the Special Olympics (SO) Southeast Asia Unified five-a-side football 9th ​​Edition 2022 in Bangkok, Thailand on Nov 13.

Special Olympics Sarawak president Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the team were eyeing the gold despite it being a tall order.

“Obviously we want them to do their best and we have helped them to prepare in terms of facilities before the tournament,” she said at a press conference here on Monday (Nov 7).

She added that efforts to develop Sarawak SO sports would continue to be intensified to ensure that the athletes would grow.

“We not only provide the facilities but we also expose them to the aspect of education in sports.

“Praise also goes to the team because they were selected as the nation’s representatives.”

Meanwhile, SO Kuching president Datin Dayang Mariani Abang Zain stressed that the recognition given to the SO Sarawak team was proof that disabled children are also special and needed to be nurtured.

“In addition to exposing special children to sports, we are also giving confidence to parents.

“We can prove that special children can successfully reach the international level.”

She hoped that parents would fully support their special children in achieving their dreams just like those of normal children.

Earlier, the flag handover ceremony to the team was also attended by team coach Badrol Hisham Majid.
