KUCHING: Hawkers and petty traders in the 7th Mile area have appealed for the speedy disbursement of financial aid under the Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance package (BKSS) as this would greatly help in easing their financial burden, said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) chief Wilfred Yap.

He said that he had recently been approached by hawkers and petty traders in the 7th Mile area, requesting for his assistance in enquiring relevant authorities on the status of their applications under BKSS and when the financial assistance amounting to RM2,250 would be disbursed to them.

Following this request, Yap with the community leaders and SUPP 7th Mile Sub-Branch members  met the hawkers and petty traders at Kota Sentosa Market to listen to their predicament and to record their particulars with the aim of checking with the relevant authorities  the financial assistance disbursement date.

Yap said he had also been informed by the hawkers and petty traders that the Covid-19 pandemic had badly affected their livelihood.

“They also expressed their gratitude to the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government under the able and progressive leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for the caring and proactive measure of the financial assistance of RM2,250.

“This goes a long way towards reducing the negative impact on their livelihood due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said in a statement on Thursday (June 11).

Yap, who is also Kota Sentosa Branch chairman, also hoped that the federal Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Sarawak GPS governments would continuously evaluate, prioritise, and enhance their policies to cushion the economic slowdown due to Covid-19, and speed up the economic recovery process by improving access to livelihoods or employment opportunities for Sarawakians.

He said he would also continue to serve as the eyes and ears of the community and try to resolve issues affecting the public.

SUPP PCB, he added, was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone facing problems, or who had come across problems of public interest and were unsure  how to handle them.
