KUCHING: The construction of National Anti-Drugs Agency’s (Nada) Cure and Care Rehabilitation Centre (CCRC) in Puncak Borneo near here is set to be completed by April this year.

Nada director-general Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah said the contractors and consultants had assured that it would be completed on time even though the project was currently seven per cent behind schedule at only 84 per cent completion.

“It is very important for the contractors and consultants, including JKR (Public Works Department), to expedite the construction of this project.

“In Sarawak, we (Nada) only have one CCRC currently. That CCRC has been given notice and instructed to be emptied out for other projects. Which is why it is crucial for this new CCRC to be completed on time,” he said during a visit to the new site yesterday.

The new CCRC sits on a 15-acre land in Puncak Borneo and can accommodate 200 court ordered patients and 50 volunteer patients at one time.

According to Zulkifli, the project was currently handled by its second contractor after the previous contractor was terminated for incompetence and poor quality of work.

A sum of RM25mln was allocated to the current contractor for the project, which began since October 2018.

Meanwhile, Zulkifli also said the new CCRC would welcome those struggling with drug addiction, who voluntarily check themselves into the centre.

“We strongly encourage those who are struggling to come forward and receive proper care and treatment for a faster recovery.”

He added that Nada was looking into ways to incorporate vocational and agricultural activities into its rehabilitation programme as a way to fully utilise the abundant space at the new CCRC.

Nada also plans to discuss with the state government about building another CCRC in the northern region, either in Bintulu or Miri.

In the meantime, Nada will be focusing on upgrading its five Cure and Care Service Centres in Sarawak.
