PULAU BRUIT: The federal government has been urged to speed up the work of upgrading poor school buildings and educators’ accommodations, especially in the rural areas of Sarawak.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Office (Corporate Affairs, Information and Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Daruk Abdullah Saidol said this matter had often been raised and there was an urgent need to tackle it.

“Educational infrastructure is very important and should be given full attention by the government. Only education can overcome poverty, especially in the rural and interior areas.

“In addition, education and health are under the federal government’s responsibilities as enshrined in the Constitution.

“I think the time has come for the responsible ministry to focus on implementation work on the ground rather than discussing the matter too much in the office.

“I also hope to see more comfortable places for educators to stay in, especially in the rural areas. This will make them more enthusiastic in providing their services in the interior areas,” he said in a news report by UKAS.

Abdullah, who is also Semop assemblyman, added that the Semop Constituency Service Centre in collaboration with several Parent[- Teacher Associations (PTA) and members of the SABERKAS Semop branch had organised a school sports holiday programme recently.

The programme, held for three days since last Saturday, involved students from 13 primary schools in nine villages and longhouses in Semop constituency.

The objective of the programme was to provide leisure and healthy activities to the children during their school holidays. Prizes were given to the winners of each event.
