KUCHING: The authorities need to speed up the Covid-19 vaccination so that herd immunity can be achieved, said Datuk Dr John Lau Pang Heng.

The Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) chairman asked about the government plans after the state had achieved herd immunity.

“If Covid-19 does not go away, do we need to get another vaccination and what is the time frame for getting another jab if needed?

“Is there ongoing local continuous scientific research and development to curb the virus?” he asked.

Lau suggested that any decision-making pertaining to Covid-19 needed to be based on facts, data, and science.

“In line with this, we salute the Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hashim’s graphic presentation of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia and R-naught (Ro) based on evidence and statistical data.

“As we mentioned, decisions based on gaining political mileage will not help to curb the spread of the virus,” he said.

Meanwhile, on behalf of SPA, he applauded the announcement made by the National Immunisation Programme Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin that Sarawak would be achieving herd immunity by the end of August.

“With his declaration that an estimated 380,000 doses will be sent to Sarawak beginning in June until the 4.4 million doses have been achieved’, many Sarawakians will be expecting their turn in getting the first dose vaccination.

“However, I have received calls from those above 60 years old, informing me that they have registered with the MySejahtera application since early March, yet they have not received any vaccination notification.

“With this, I hope that more elderly will be notified of their vaccination appointments in the coming weeks,” he added.

On another note, Lau urged all Sarawakians to stay at home in order to look after each other’s own health.

“If you see anyone violating the standard operating procedures, please do not take the law into your own hands but instead inform the police immediately,” he reminded.
