KUCHING: The state’s average grade point (GPN) for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), at 4.92 points for the 2023 session, is the best since the examination was first held.

State Education Director Datuk Dr. Azhar Ahmad said this is the first time the GPN has reached below 5 points.

He stated that the previous year (2022), the state GPN stood at 5.07 points.

“Therefore, I am pleased to announce that the performance of SPM candidates in 2023 is better compared to the previous year.

“This is the best grade achieved in a decade with the implementation of the Malay Language and History subjects as mandatory pass subjects in SPM since 2013.

“Even more, it is the best since SPM began because this is the first time we have surpassed the value below 5 points,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after holding a press conference in conjunction with the announcement of the 2023 SPM examination results at the State Education Department here, yesterday.

He also revealed that it is the desire of the State Education Department to achieve the said target.

“Actually, what we achieved this time (4.92 points) is better than the original target in the strategic plan, which was 4.94 points. We managed to achieve better than the original target,” he added.

Meanwhile, he added that the department will further strengthen efforts to reduce the gap between urban and rural areas in the coming year.

He said the gap between the two areas remains wide and focus will be given to schools in rural areas as a significant number of schools are located in these areas.

“We have specific strategies to help schools in rural areas improve their performance to become even better in the future.

“Among them is conducting focused performance dialogues for schools in rural areas in certain districts.

“Also, the increase in the number of tuition classes as announced by the state government last year. This year, we will further strengthen guidance classes in rural areas,” he said.
