KUCHING: The long-awaited Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination began in earnest today with students sitting for the Bahasa Melayu and Pendidikan Seni Visual papers on the first day.

At SMK St Joseph here a total of 219 fifth formers are taking the exam, which had to be rescheduled to this year with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the air was one of anxious expectancy from as early as 6am.

Many arrived early, some looking nervous and others calm, but all in their crisp school uniform, religiously observing Covid-19 standard operating procedures as they waited to get into the examination hall.

Before being allowed to enter the hall, they were instructed to gather inside the Datuk Polycarp Sim Stadium for a briefing from the school after which they were allowed to move into the examination hall at 7.45am.

The written exam commenced at 8am.
