KUCHING: The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2020 examination finally pushed off on Monday (Feb 22) here under the new normal.

New Sarawak Tribune visited several schools and found that strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) were practised among teachers and students alike — face masks, body temperature checks and the works.

Parents were seen sending their children to school as early as 6am.

Due to strict SOPs and to ensure the safety of the school denizens, members of the media were not allowed to enter the school and only observed the situation from outside the compound.

According to a teacher of SMK St Mary, 104 students from the school would be sitting for the SPM 2020 examination.

The teacher said all students and parents had given their cooperation by complying with SOPs.

On Monday, the candidates sat for their first examination paper — Bahasa Malaysia (BM) Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Meanwhile, Connie Tan, whose daughter is sitting for the exam at SMK Kuching High, said her daughter was prepared.

“My daughter, Chzuelynn Tan SzeQiin, managed to adapt well to e-learning despite the challenges at the beginning of the pandemic.

“But she gradually managed to schedule and work her way through by communicating with her teachers and tutors consistently.”

Tan said she was glad that her daughter had a positive mindset, which helped her to adapt to the new normal of learning.

“As a parent, I wish my daughter all the best, may she stay focused on the examination now, and achieve her career goals.”

She also reminded her daughter to continue to follow SOPs for safety throughout the examination, and hoped other parents would also play their role in educating and reminding their children of SOP compliance.
