Sriwijaya 737 goes missing after take-off from Jakarta

A Sriwijaya Boeing 737-500, with more than 50 people on board, has gone missing just five minutes after take-off from Jakarta bound for Pontianak.

According to Aviation Herald, the 737 was “about 11nm north of Jakarta’s Sokarno International Airport over the Java Sea when radar and radio contact was lost with the aircraft.”

Flightradar ADS-B data indicated the 737 departed on runway 25R at 07:36Z and was climbing through 10,600 feet at 07:39:50Z about 11nm north of Sokarno Airport then lost 10,000ft of altitude in less than a minute.

Early reports on social media state that the aircraft went missing and that communications with air traffic are lost.

The aircraft is a 27-year-old Boeing 737-500, according to registration details included in the tracking data.

Sriwijaya Air, an Indonesian airline, said in a statement it is still gathering detailed information regarding the flight before it can make any statement. – Agencies
