CHIENG Jin Ek (GPS-Bukit Assek) hopes that the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development, and Sarawak Sports Council (SSC) take immediate attention and provide funding for the repairs on Stadium Tun Zaidi, Sibu.

He pointed out that as the Sarawak Budget 2023 not only focused on development and economy but also social, sports funding was also an important aspect in the Budget.

“Sports foster positivity, self-esteem and self-identity and healthier lifestyles, and the Sarawak government is targeting to produce eight Sarawakian Olympians by 2030 as part of the efforts in making the state a sports powerhouse in Malaysia.

“Unfortunately, Stadium Tun Zaidi, Sibu has been closed since the Covid-19 pandemic struck from 2020. It is now in poor condition and needs immediate attention.

“This is to ensure that Sibu folk continue to enjoy sports activities in the stadium,” he said this in his debate speech on the Supply Bill (2023) 2022 during the fourth day of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Thursday (Nov 24).

“Besides, the Premier also approved the upgrading of Jalan Oya (Phase 2) project and with the construction and upgrading of these six link roads in Sibu, I believe that the traffic jam in Sibu can be reduced and improved.”
