SIBU: Persatuan Masyarakat Melayu Bandar Sibu (PMMBS) has expressed disappointment over the disconnection of electricity at Medan Niaga Simpang Tiga here since May.

Its chairman Rabek Ali Hamid said Medan Niaga which belongs to Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) houses 12 stalls selling mostly food and drinks.

The electricity supply was disconnected due to unpaid bills.

“The stall operators have been facing the problem because SEDC did not pay the electricity bills for three months. But the  stall operators have been paying the rental fee of RM350 to RM400 a month.

“This is affecting our business as customers no longer want to patronise our stalls,” he told a press conference at the Medan Niaga on Friday.

Rabek said it was embarrassing for SEDC, as a responsible government-link corporation (GLC), to defer payment of the electricity bill.

“We have been told that all the bills and everything are under Kuching SEDC. Why is it so hard to pay only around RM300 a month?

“The operators have been complaining to SEDC Sibu office but the answer given is ‘Be patient, why do you always complain?”

Rabek said the situation had affected their income badly and some operators might be
forced to close their businesses if the problem remained unsolved.

The stall operators are hoping that their elected representative in the area would look into the matter.
