KUCHING: Reform Party Sarawak (STAR) will work with the State Government to defend the state’s oil and gas rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Its President Lina Soo said the party will set up an alternative legal team to supplement the current lawyers to assist on the PETRONAS suit against the state seeking declaration that the company is the rightful owner of the petroleum resources.

“We will have three practising lawyers to assist. One of them is Robert Pei, a Sarawak-born lawyer who is currently practising in Australia,” she told reporters at a press conference at Telang Usan Hotel here yesterday.

She stressed there is a need of expert lawyers who understand the issues clearly.

“Therefore there is a need to set up a fund, called Sarawak MA63 Fund, which will be used to pay for a legal opinion from an Australian expert on Constitutional Law, International Law, and Federalism,” she pointed out.

According to Soo, the fund collected will be monitored by a lawyer, and hoped the public can come forward to show their support by donating.

“In the event the Petronas court case proceeds, the MA63 Fund shall also be facilitated to proceed to the British court if need be,” she said.

Soo explained to bring the matter up to the British Queen’s Counsel (QC) is to raise the matter of MA63 to be determined by the British court as the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974 is a breach of the MA63.

Meanwhile, the party also calls upon all politicians in Sarawak to stop pointing fingers and playing the blame game on the matter.

“At a time when Sarawak is in danger of losing claim to its territorial boundary and petroleum resources, now is not the time for politicking,” Soo stressed.
