KUCHING: Sarawakians have been reminded to be on alert and prepare for a possible surge in Covid-19 Omicron cases in the state.

The reminder comes from Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian after the country saw the number of cases increasing to 7,234  cases on Friday (Feb 4).

“(It is) expected. But panicking does not help. The worst has yet to come as many have very mild symptoms and don’t even know they are infected.

“It is no longer the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) policy to contact trace everyone exposed in the last 14 days,” he said in a Facebook post on Friday (Feb 4).

He added that after two years of emerging new knowledge everyday on Covid-19, everyone would have to start living with the virus as safely as possible by observing standard operating procedures (SOP), wearing face masks, vaccinating and complying with the Test, Report, Inform, Isolate, Seek (TRIIS) method.

“Omicron may be mild but still a risk to ‘tip over’ for our elderly, those who are at high risk such as those with high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and immunocompromised.

“Omicron is more infectious than Delta and you may unknowingly pass the infection to the vulnerable at home, work and community.

“So, let’s be on alert and prepare ourselves for a Omicron surge in Sarawak. Together, we shall overcome Covid-19 in Sarawak,” said Dr Sim, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government.
