State athletes now undergoing training

Malaysia Deaf Games

KUCHING: Deaf athletes from Sarawak are currently busy training for the upcoming Malaysia Deaf Games (Sopma) 2021.

Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the Sopma 2021 is expected to be held on July 11 to 17 in Johor next year provided the situation permits it.

“By the end of this November, the athletes will be selected to compete in the various sports,” she said in a press conference after receiving a courtesy call from Sarawak Deaf Sports Association (SSDeaf) at her office, Baitul Makmur Two building, Petra Jaya, yesterday.

She said among the sports games that the athletes will compete in include badminton, tenpin bowling, futsal and sports (olahraga).

According to SSDeaf in a press release, in preparation for Para Sukma Games Johor 2021, all ten teams of the Sarawak Para Sukma Team are preparing well for the games which are rescheduled for March 6 till 14, 2021. The games were supposed to be held in August this year.

“Today, we are 135 days away from the opening day of competitions. In view of the schedule, all athletes in all ten sports are putting in concerted efforts to do well.

SSDeaf said they aim to be champions again in Johor for the 14th consecutive times and the target for the Para Sukma Johor 2021 is to bring back 60 gold medals.
