KUCHING: State and federal leaders alike lauded Sarawak-born national para-athlete Bonnie Bunyau Gustin for breaking the world record for the men’s over-72kg category at the 11th Fazza Dubai 2021 Para Powerlifting World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday (June 22).
Federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri in a Facebook post on Wednesday, noted the success of the Malaysian athlete at the international level as a source of pride.
“We just received news on Bonnie Bunyau Gustin’s success in beating the world record in the Para Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai. Congratulations,” she said.
She also congratulated other national athletes, namely Kisona Selvaduray, Connie Chu Kang Ni, Lee Hup Wei and Syarifuddin Azman who emerged victorious in other international sporting events this month.
“Thank you to all participants, coaches, managers and associations involved. Your dedication and enthusiasm are truly commendable,” she said.
Similarly, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas also congratulated Bonnie for his feat.
“Congratulations to our fellow Sarawakian. We are proud of you,” he said in a post through the Bukit Saban Access Facebook page.
Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah also lauded the achievement.
“World Record for Malaysian Para athlete Bonnie Bunyau from Kuching, Sarawak. Congratulations.
“InsyaAllah, this will inspire other para-athletes from Sarawak to continue training hard as well as focusing to achieve their dream, unleash their potential to the maximum, break barrier, achieve glory for themselves, for Sarawak and Malaysia,” she said.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth chief Gerald Rentap Jabu also offered his congratulatory message to the Sarawak-born para-athlete.
“Truly very proud of your effort,” he said in a Facebook post.
