KUCHING: A flood mitigation project at Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Jalan Desa Wira is expected to be completed by end of January next year.

A political secretary to the Chief Minister Tan Kai said the project cost RM850,000, and the fund was a special allocation from the Sarawak government.

“The flood mitigation project is located near Lorong 17 of Kampung Sinar Budi Baru; the project is to add big culverts to ease the flow of flash floods and the construction of concrete drains to replace the earth drains,” he said when contacted, yesterday.

Tan said after the mitigation project is complete, the rural transformation programme (RTP) projects will commence.

“The RTP projects include the improvement of the drainage system, that is to change the earth drains to  concrete drains,” he said.

He said that the overall RTP projects are going to be complete before the next election in 2021.

“Currently, there is road repair also at Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, but that it is not a planned project,” Tan said.

He stated that Jalan Desa Wira was resurfaced since last year, and there is a need for urgent road repair as it was spoiled by heavy trucks.

“The road repair should be completed in a few days, and will not cause any more jam in that area,” said Tan.

Meanwhile, when contacted,  the village head of Kampung Sinar Budi Baru Kaunda Arpan, said so far during the road repair, the traffic jam was still acceptable and manageable.

“Now the jam is not so bad as before, because the road surface is going to be tarred soon,” he said.

He also urged the community in the village to be patient if there is any jam caused by the road repair and drainage works.

“I want to thank the state government for its assistance with the flood mitigation project that will definitely reduce flood problems here,” Kaunda said.
