KUCHING: The Sarawak government has helped as much as possible to solve the problem of structural cracks in the homes of residents at Kampung Tunku RPR, Phase 2, Petra Jaya.

The cracks and damage occurred due to the work on sewerage projects in the surrounding areas since 2017.

Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Assistant Minister Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said the project was under the federal government through the Sarawak Sewerage Services Department (JPPS), and implemented by contractor Nishimatsu-Hock Seng Lee Group Consortium.

“The state government is committed to helping the residents because as soon as we receive complaints, we immediately instruct the Public Works Department to conduct damage assessment.

“The contractor has agreed to take full responsibility and repairs started a few months ago,” she said today.

The Samariang assemblywoman added that the state government could not manage the project itself because it was the responsibility of the contractor to resolve any problems that arose, in addition to it being implemented by the federal government.

“The amount of compensation to be paid to the residents is based on what has been assessed because from a legal point of view, if there is any damage during the implementation of a project, the contractor should be fully responsible.

“Therefore, the contractor will bear all the costs and ensure the damage is repaired, and if it is necessary to pay compensation, it will also be paid.

“The contractor will also ensure that this matter is resolved amicably and transparently in accordance with the terms in the project implementation agreement contract.”

Sharifah Hasidah revealed that the state government only acted as a mediator and many negotiations as well as discussions had been conducted.

“Residents have also set up their own committees in dealing with this issue. My advice is, if they are not satisfied with the repair work or compensation, they can have further discussions with the contractor because the contractor has promised to be fully responsible.”

She also hoped that residents would give their full cooperation to the relevant agencies, including contractors, as there were some residents who refused to cooperate or meet with contractors as well as not allow them to enter their homes.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Hock Seng Lee Berhad said the contractor compensated and carried out repair work on the homes based on the assessment made, which started a few months ago, and still ongoing.

“We will review the report and detailed data on this project, including the amount of compensation. An official statement will be issued when everything is completed later.”

Earlier, several representatives of Kampung Tunku residents lodged a complaint to the media expressing dissatisfaction with the repair work carried out and demanded that the agencies involved, including the contractor, inform them of the actual amount of compensation they received.
