KUCHING: The recent amendment to the State Land Code will be a boon to the exploration of astronomy.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government, through the Sarawak Islamic Council (SIC), was conducting research into the field.

“I am grateful that the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) has passed the State Land Code, and this means that not only we have rights to our land, but our air space as well.

“In this regard, this is important and will ease our work in SIC as the council is studying the matter related to the field of astronomy,” he said during the ‘Majlis Kesyukuran Aidilfitri Agensi-Agensi Islam’ here today.

Abang Johari, who is also Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, said that following the amendment to the State Land Code, permission was needed from the state government if people wanted to use its air space.

“This is expected to give positively to the progress of the state and our future economy, and at the same time we want to contribute to curbing climate change.

“And following the teachings of the Al-Quran, there must be a balance between development and preserving the environment as we live on this planet,” he said, adding that the earth faced climate change.

The premier said that most importantly the harmonious environment in the state must be continued and preserved so that the leaders could manage it well for its people and future generations, at the same ensure that the state moved forward more steadily.

“In addition, when we have good intentions and carry out our duties with sincerity, God will give us inspiration for us to further strengthen our situation,” he said.
