KUCHING: The Sarawak government will be following closely the situation involving 10 Sarawakians among 30 Malaysians stranded in Nigeria, and aims to bring them home.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the matter would be raised in the Cabinet by Santubong MP Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

“We will wait for what follows after (the Cabinet meeting),” he told a press conference held at the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

He said the state government would have to wait for the federal government’s decision on the matter before taking any action.

The 30 Malaysians have been stranded in Lagos, Nigeria following the country’s movement restriction to contain the spread of Covid-19.

The issue first came to light after one of them, identified as Malcolm Goh, pleaded with the Malaysian government for help in getting them home, via his Facebook post.

Goh mentioned that the group were unable to return to Malaysia after all flights were cancelled following the closure of Lagos Airport. He highlighted that the only means of transport for them to come home was via chartered flight.

In addressing this matter, Uggah said the state government took note of the issue and was very concerned for the wellbeing of Sarawakians wherever they are.

“To those Sarawakians having any problem in foreign lands, do not hesitate to contact the Gabungan Parti Sarawak government in the state.

“We are always here to help, protect and do whatever we can to reduce your difficulties,” he added.
