KUCHING: The state government is helping fishermen to sell their catch after the movement control order (MCO) saw demand for their products plummet.

Agriculture Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail said a total of RM600,000 in allocation is given to Sarawak Fishermen’s Association (Penesa) and Area Fishermen’s Association (PNK).

This comprised of an allocation of RM30,000 to each of the 18 PNK and RM60,000 to Penesa for the purpose of buying extra catch from fishermen.

“The state government has given special allocation in the form of subsidies to buy the surplus catch and to sell it to the public in a move at to assist the fishermen.

“The programme is going well and we found that the fishermen no longer have problems selling their catch,” he said when met during his work visit here yesterday.

The state government wants to ensure all fishing activities it deems as an essential service during the MCO, he said, adding that the initiative would benefit some 3,000 fishermen state-wide.
