State honoured by royal visit, says chief minister

KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has described the King and Queen’s visit to Sarawak as a historic moment for the state and its people.

He said Sarawak was deeply honoured to have been picked as among the earliest destinations by the royal couple for their nationwide visit since His Majesty ascended the throne.

Abang Johari, on behalf of the state government and the people of Sarawak, congratulated the King on his appointment as the 16th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on Jan 31.

Speaking at a state banquet for the royal couple on Thursday night, the chief minister said ever since gaining independence through Malaysia 56 years ago, Sarawak still aspires to be a progressive state like the states in Peninsular Malaysia.

“Sarawak wants to utilise its rich resources and manpower to develop its socio-economy.

“Sarawakians aspire that one day the state would achieve a developed status where they could enjoy good income and able to live in harmony as Malaysians albeit according to its own mould,” he added.

Abang Johari said the state government is working hard to build infrastructure facilities, Internet infrastructure, basic amenities and utilities for its people, especially those residing in the rural areas, to citizens to have a better living standard.
