State records highest daily death toll at nine cases

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded its highest number of daily Covid-19 death with nine fatalities today.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said this brought the death toll due to Covid-19 in the state to 272.

Five of the fatalities were reported in Sibu, two in Miri while Bintulu and Kapit each recorded one death.

The total number of death cases has increased from an average of one case a day in March during which 29 deaths were reported to an average of two a day in April with 69 deaths. For this month, the death cases further increased to an average of three cases a day with a total of 91 cases as of today.

The 264th fatality is a local 45-year-old man who had received treatment at Bintulu Hospital as a result of shortness of breath.

He tested positive for Covid-19 on May 15 and died on May 22. The case had a co-morbidity of hypertension and diabetes.

The 265th death case involved a 72-year-old local man who was found unconscious at home in Sibu by his family and was confirmed dead by the medical team on May 23.

The 266th death was a 32-year-old local man who was discovered unconscious at home by family members and promptly transferred to Miri Hospital. He was pronounced dead on May 24.

The 267th fatality involved a 72-year-old local man who had been treated for shortness of breath at Sibu Hospital.

The case has been exhibiting signs of cough, fever, vomiting, and loss of appetite. He tested positive for Covid-19 on May 8. His health deteriorated and was confirmed dead on May 24. The case had co-morbidities of diabetes, high blood pressure, gout and heart disease.

Meanwhile, a 62-year-old woman who had been treated for shortness of breath at Miri Hospital is the 268th fatality. She died on May 25.

The 269th fatality was a 66-year-old local man who had been treated for respiratory distress at the Kapit Hospital and swabs taken for a Covid-19 screening test with rT-PCR on May 18 were found to be positive.

For further treatment, the case was referred to Sibu Hospital. He died on May 25. The case had both liver disease and dyslipidaemia.

An 81-year-old woman who was treated for breathing difficulties in Sibu Hospital is the 270th fatality.

The 271st death involved a 91-year-old woman who sought treatment at Sibu Hospital after a positive close contact screening. She was found positive on May 12. Her health deteriorated and she was confirmed dead on May 25. 

Meanwhile, the ninth death reported today involved a 61-year-old woman who was referred to Sibu Hospital from a health facility owing to weariness.

The case was discovered to have developed symptoms of cough, vomiting, shortness of breath, and headache and swabs taken for the rT-PCR screening test on May 15 were found to be positive for Covid-19.

Her condition deteriorated and she died on May 27.

The case had co-morbidity of high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidaemia and obesity.
