It’s status quo for Sarawak

KUCHING: Sarawak will not implement conditional movement control order (CMCO) on Monday, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

He said the state decided to maintain the status quo first and that directives under MCO 1, 2 and 3 would stay for the time being.

Uggah added Sarawak fully respected the announcement made by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on the need to reopen the economy.

“The state government has decided to study the implications of the reopening of such economic activities, which sectors to open, when and to what extent they will be allowed to open.

“For this purpose, the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) intends to make a decision after it has studied the changes in the regulations in Act 342 pursuant to the announcement by the prime minister,” said Uggah, who is also the SDMC chairman in a statement yesterday.

He said SDMC must ensure that the reopening of the economic activities and sectors suited Sarawak’s circumstances.

“Taking into account Sarawak’s local situation in terms of the Covid-19 cases, logistic capability, the capacity of the Health Department and its geographical circumstances, the SDMC has found that many of the standards of compliance of the reopening of the economic activities will not be conducive in the state.

“However, Sarawak will announce in stages the reopening of economic activities and other sectors.

“This will be done after every minute detail of the standard operation procedures (SOP) and guidelines are studied,” he pointed out.

Uggah said those who had received approval from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) to operate during MCO Phase 4 were required to get the state government’s approval through the SDMC for their applications to be reviewed before they could operate.
