State to hold first international darts competition

KUCHING: For the first time, the Kuching City Open 2019 (KCO19) Darts Championship will be held on an international level this year.

This means that it would be the first time that Sarawak hosts an international darts competition, although the competition has been held since 2016.

As such, the KCO19 Darts Championship, which has been recognised by the World Dart Federation (WDF) and gets advisory assistance from Malaysia Dart Association, has entered its fourth edition and is to be held at Centre Court, Hills Shopping Mall here from July 19-21.

Organised by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), the competition has received encouraging response with participants from Brunei, Philippines, Singapore, Peninsular Malaysia, as well as local Sarawakians.

DBKU mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahab Abang Julai said the event has been featured in the commission’s calendar in conjunction with its City Day celebration, due to the overwhelming response.

He added that among the objectives of organising the three-day championship is to promote Kuching as a sports tourism
destination.

“We also want to create a platform for darters from inside and outside the country to display their skills and to spur the state’s darts industry and unearth new talents,” he said in his speech during the KCO19 Darts Championship opening ceremony which was officiated at by the Chief Minister’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.

This year, the championship is divided into the following categories: Team, Second Chance, Men’s Singles Open, Ladies’ Singles Open, and Ladies’ Doubles Open.

A total prize money of RM25,450 is up for grabs and winners will also receive trophies and medals.
