KUCHING: Sarawak Independence Day (also known as Hari Sarawak or Sarawak Day) will be celebrated on a moderate scale, said Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah (pic).

“We have no intention of making our state’s independence celebration grand as it is just for us, Sarawakians,” he explained yesterday after the Kuching Marathon 2019 press conference at Baitulmakmur Building, Petra Jaya here.

Karim said the celebration would be held on a moderate manner because the state also celebrated Malaysia Day   on September 16.

“We celebrate Sarawak Independence Day in remembrance of the day that Sarawak served the government. Even though we were not 100 per cent fully independent, the state’s administration was in the palms of the people.

“Due to that, we will remember July 22 as Sarawak Independence Day and the day Sarawakians administered the state,” explained Karim.
