KUCHING: State Social Welfare Department (JKM)’s preparation for the monsoon flood season is in full swing, said Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

The Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister mentioned that JKM has one depot – located at Jalan Datuk Mohd Musa in Samarahan where all items and equipment are well kept and ready to be dispatched to the affected places, especially evacuation centres.

“Supply equipments such as beds, pillows, blankets and mats are well kept at the depot and ready to be dispatched when needed. Manpower is also ready.

“The number of front bases has been identified and they are all stocked up with dry food items such as rice, oil, coffee, tea, sugar and canned food.

“The numbers of the items have also been counted so that they can be supplied to the victims who are not evacuated from affected areas,” she told reporters when met during her visit to squatters at Lorong Chawan 13 here today.

She further said that the front bases are placed far from the city and not difficult to access to ensure that they can serve well and fast in supplying the necessities to the affected longhouses or villages in the interior.

“As part of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) at the state, division and district levels, JKM will work with other agencies in managing flood disaster.

“Upon receiving information on the flood, JKM will directly go on the ground to provide first and immediate aid in the form of dry food or catered food to the victims.

“Since we are still in the midst of Covid-19 pandemic, the only difference is that we will no longer have cooking activity at evacuation centres,” she added.
