BALAI RINGIN: A total of 19 mini stadiums have been built throughout Sarawak, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said every district in Sarawak had been equipped with a sports complex.

“These sports facilities are very important for us to discover new talents to represent Sarawak and the nation.

“This is because sports can prevent our youths from getting involved in unhealthy activities,” he said when speaking at the earth-breaking ceremony of the Balai Ringin Mini Stadium here, which was officiated at by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg today.

Abdul Karim, who is also Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, added that strengthening Sarawak’s sports sector would make it a sports powerhouse in the future.

“For the Balai Ringin area, the sports complex will include a football field, running track, badminton and takraw courts plus climbing facilities,” he said.

There are many athletes coming from the rural regions besides those from the urban area, the minister pointed out.
