THE state government’s efforts to reduce the carbon footprint and shape the desired environmental sustainability goal through the Sustainable Sarawak Blueprint is indeed commendable, said Datuk Ibrahim Baki.

The GPS-Satok assemblyman noted that the seriousness of this was put into gear with the formation of the new Ministry of Energy and Environment which would plan, coordinate, and provide direction for the development of green growth, renewable energy, sustainability, and climate change.

“The state government’s announcement to develop the Sustainable Sarawak Blueprint has received a strong commendation from RAM Holdings Bhd (RAM) which praised the visionary and strategic move.

“Focusing on three sources of clean green energy namely hydropower, solar, and hydrogen signals that we are on the right track,” he said in his maiden speech today during the motion of appreciation to the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud speech yesterday.

Other than the well-known hydropower that Sarawak is exporting to Kalimantan, Indonesia, Ibrahim who is also the GPS DUN Chief Whip, pointed out that the move towards introducing green hydrogen leveraged on the state resources had attracted mega multinational players.

“The world recognised our efforts and potentials as recently our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was given the honour to deliver a keynote address at the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam, Netherlands where 3,500 government and industry leaders from all over the world gathered to explore and familiarise themselves with the latest hydrogen technologies, applications, and solutions,” he said.

He stressed that it was important for Sarawak to leverage on sustainable energy development and aspire to become the ‘Battery of ASEAN’ in powering sustainable growth in the region.

“We are blessed with resources which we can leverage and we have the opportunity to take a slice of the hydrogen pie, thus we should grab it with both hands,” he added.
