KUCHING: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak and Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) will be organising the Borneo International Halal Showcase (Bihas) in mid-September.

According to UiTM Sarawak rector Prof Datuk Dr Jamil Hamali, the event will be held simultaneously with the 12th Borneo International Conference in Brunei Darussalam.

“Last year’s Bihas in Pontianak, Indonesia attracted the participation of many halal products entrepreneurs from Sarawak, Sabah, Indonesia and Brunei.

“Through this showcase, we are not only able to introduce halal products, but we also create marketing networks between countries in the Borneo archipelago,” he said at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony here yesterday.

On UiTM’s Diploma in Halal Management programme, Dr Jamil said,”To date, a total of 195 students have enrolled in this programme; they will be exposed to practices in the halal industry.”

Meanwhile, MIS president Datuk Misnu Taha said the halal industry was currently growing rapidly at the global level.

“Sarawak is still lagging behind in the industry, so we will certainly assist those who want to market local halal products internationally,” he stressed.
