MIRI: Sarawak’s own aircraft is a big boost to the state’s tourism industry as it means the state will have more control of its tourism development, says Miri Mayor Adam Yii.

He was responding to a question on the Chief Minister Datuk PatinggiAbang JohariTun Openg’s suggestion on the State planning to have its own airplane as part of its initiative to better improve the local tourism sector.

When met at his office yesterday Yii added, for Miri, the initiative would definitely benefit the city as at the moment connectivity is crucial in bringing tourists to the city.

He added, the aircraft proposal is a good start for the state and it will for sure change the whole landscape.

“Just imagine if we have direct flight to Tokyo (Japan) for example, with our own airplanes…the proposal announced byAbang Johari is very timely,” he said.

Yii added, the state government had put a lot of emphasis on the tourism.

“This can be seen through allocations given by the government in developing tourism infrastructures in the state. For Miri allocations were given to various tourist attractions spots as part of long term investments,” he said.

“These efforts take times to bear fruits, you can’t expect overnight results,” Yii pointed out.

He believed with such initiative, it will help the city’s economy recover in time.

“I strongly believed we are on the right track,” he said.

The mayor was met by the Northern Sarawak Journalist Association (NSJA) committee members yesterday during their courtesy call at his office to hand over an invitation letter to the association’s installation ceremony to be held on March 1 at a leading hotel here.
