KUCHING: The Multi-Fuel Refuelling Stations, to be built in the state, will offer competitive prices for hydrogen fuel.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, in revealing this, said he believed the retail price of hydrogen fuel would be cheaper in the future.

“Hydrogen will be cheaper over time, just like our mobile phones which used to be expensive. We used to use Atur mobile phones which cost RM8,000. Nowadays, phones are smaller and cheaper.

“This goes for hydrogen fuel as well because as the production becomes more efficient, the process will be cheaper.  Hence, I believe that hydrogen will be cheaper over time,” he said during the ground breaking ceremony of the Darul Hana Multi-Fuel Refuelling Station at Jalan Tun Salahuddin here today.

On the prices of conventional fossil fuel, Abang Johari said they would be based on the current market prices. However, prices of electric charging rate at the multi-fuel refilling stations would be determined later.

He also predicted the global market would lean towards the use of hydrogen fuel based on reports from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

“This is because hydrogen fuel is environmentally friendly. And the world is in need of a clean environment.

“Sarawak will play a part in the ever changing global economy and by 2050, the world’s economy will drive demand for hydrogen.

“This will be a beginning, starting now where energies revolves around the use of hydrogen fuel.  Sarawak will use its resources to produce hydrogen fuel,” he added.

Abang Johari said Sarawak was also blessed with ample amount of water which could be used to produce hydrogen through a process called water electrolysis.
