KUCHING: Residents in the Demak Laut constituency who live close to the river and sea have been urged to take precautions in case flooding in the area worsens.

Assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said since rain is still forecast residents must be vigilant.

“To be safe, electrical equipment needs to be placed in higher places and also make sure important documents are kept in a safe place.

“Residents also need to get the latest information on the weather and they must follow the authorities’ instructions if they are asked to move to the Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS),” he said at a disaster donation presentation ceremony for the constituency here on Monday (Jan 30).

Dr Hazland added every year during the monsoon season, the phenomenon of high tides and continuous heavy rain will cause the water level to rise and thus cause flash floods, affecting especially the people who live by the river.

“This can be seen in the Kampung Bako area namely in Kampung Bako Hulu, Bako Tengah and Bako Hilir,” he said.

On a related matter, Dr Hazland, who is also Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability presented donations to a total of 77 heads of household (KIR) from Kampung Bako Hulu and Bako Tengah.

The contribution is aimed to ease the burden of those affected by the recent flood.

Meanwhile, also present were Kampung Bako Penghulu Janibah Hazmi, and Kampung Bako Hulu village chief Sapri Joni.
